A. Boating Course
|
The Boating course helps boaters to become more competent and safe on the water. The course consists of approximately 40 hours of classroom instruction covering topics such as: government regulations, mandatory safety equipment requirements, rules of the road, handling boats under power and sail, aids to navigation, anchoring procedures, chart reading, plotting courses, and responsibilities of the skipper. The exam for the federal government's mandatory Pleasure Craft Operator's Card (PCOC) is included in this course. Successful completion also qualifies you for membership in CPS and eligibility to take Advanced and Elective courses.

B.Piloting
|
Course Objective: An in-depth treatment for serious boaters who want to improve their navigation and plotting skills, as well as to improve knowledge about dealing with adverse conditions and emergencies. Topics include: tides; currents; buoyancy and stability; hull construction and performance; navigating in a current; relative bearings leading to running fixes; review of 2 and 3 bearing fixes. You will demonstrate and ability to tie several knots and to splice 3 strand rope, with the results credited toward the final exam mark.

Course Objective : Orientation for the boater who utilizes technology for navigation and safety afloat. Topics include: electrical power systems for boats, wiring, galvanic corrosion, stray current corrosion, radio signal propagation, depth sounders, Radar, Loran C, GPS, fuel vapour detectors, fluxgate compasses. Autopilots and instrumentation.

Marine Maintenance

Course Objective : Expanding the average boat-owner's knowledge of vessel maintenance, topics include: seasonal maintenance and techniques for the repair of wood, fiberglass and metal hulls; maintenance of electrical and mechanical systems, including gasoline, diesel and outboard engines; spars, rigging and ground tackle; fire & safety protection; moorings & berths; tools & fittings.

Navigating With GPS

Offered in Spring 2008
Course Objective Covers navigation fundamentals; the Global Positioning System and its sources of error; navigation techniques using waypoints and conventional charts; GPS placement and performance. Principles are stressed rather than the operation of a specific brand of receiver.
